A Perfect Day at Sea exploring Lefkada islands: An Ionian experience not to miss!

There are few things as magical as a day spent on Ionian Island hoping, where emerald-green waters meet hidden beaches, secret coves and charming villages. Early September, we decided to treat ourselves and our kids to the Ionian experience we often recommend to our guests who stay in our Ionian luxury villas. And they come back excited about a great day along a private daily boat trip, starting from the lovely coastal town of Nydri. What followed was an unforgettable journey through some of the most beautiful and lesser-known corners of the Ionian Islands — a day filled with stunning seascapes, wildlife encounters, diving adventures, and Greek hospitality.

Departure from Nydri

Our adventure began early in the morning from the marina at Nydri, a bustling port on Lefkada’s eastern coast. The calm waters sparkled under the morning sun, and our boat, fully equipped and comfortable, was ready to whisk us away into a day of exploration of a unique Ionian exprerience. The kids were bubbling with excitement, sunscreen was generously applied, and we set off with wide smiles and high hopes. My nephew, George, was our captain for the day.

First Stop: Papanikolis Cave – Nature’s Cathedral

George first took us to Papanikolis Cave, located on the western side of Meganisi island. This impressive sea cave, named after a legendary Greek submarine, is known for its massive entrance and the turquoise glow of the water inside. We slowed down to take pictures and admired the sheer scale of the natural formation.

Inside the cave, the light filtering through the entrance gave the water an almost magical glow. The kids were awestruck, peering into the depths and marveling at the play of shadows on the cave walls. While we didn’t swim here, it was the perfect scenic stop to begin the day’s journey.

Second Stop: Atokos Island – A Hidden Paradise with Unexpected Guests

Continuing our Ionian island hoping, we cruised further south towards Atokos Island, a remote and uninhabited islet known for its wild beauty. We anchored at a secluded cove with crystal-clear green waters that looked like they belonged in a dream. The beach was stunning, but it was the unexpected residents that truly stole the show.

A group of wild black pigs, famous among local sailors, had come down from the forest and were trotting along the shore. Some of the boats nearby offered them fruit and leftovers, and to our amazement, the pigs swam out to collect their treats! The kids were in absolute awe — and maybe a little squeamish — watching pigs paddling gracefully in the sea. It was equal parts amusing and surreal, and certainly an Ionian experience talk about.

Third Stop: Kastos Island – Like Swimming in a Pool

Next, George took us to Kastos, one of the least populated Ionian islands. Here, we anchored at a stunning beach with crystal-clear, emerald green waters that looked like they’d been photoshopped. It was like diving into a private swimming pool — only better.

With no other boats in sight, we had the beach to ourselves. The kids dove off the boat repeatedly, squealing with joy each time they hit the cool water. We floated, snorkeled, and soaked up the sun, feeling like we were in our own private paradise. The peacefulness of Kastos in our Ionian island hoping was a beautiful contrast to the busier stops ahead.

Fourth Stop: Kalamos Island – Another Slice of Heaven

From Kastos, we headed to Kalamos Island, another hidden gem of the Ionian Sea. We anchored at another spectacular beach, like Kastos but with its own unique charm. Again, the water was glass-clear and shaded a rich, deep green that shimmered in the sunlight.

Here too, the kids were in their element — jumping, swimming, and playing endless games in the water. We could have easily stayed for hours, but hunger was calling.

Lunch Stop: Traditional Taverna on Kalamos

We docked at a small marina on Kalamos and headed to a traditional Greek taverna overlooking the bay. The warm hospitality and the smell of grilled seafood welcomed us. We feasted on fresh calamari, spaghetti with schrimp, small cheese pies and Greek salad — all washed down with local wine and cold lemonades for the kids.

Everything was freshly prepared, and the flavors were exceptional. The taverna offered us not just a meal, but a true taste of Greek island life — yet another distinctive Ionian experience.

Optional Stop: Vathy Village, Meganisi

While we had lunch on Kalamos, Vathy Village on nearby Meganisi is another excellent alternative for a midday stop. With its pretty harbor and cozy tavernas, it’s a lovely choice for those seeking a livelier vibe or a stroll through a picturesque fishing village. We made a brief stop there on the way back — just long enough to enjoy the postcard-perfect views and stretch our legs.

Final Stop: Scorpios Island

As the sun began its descent, we made our final stop at the legendary Scorpios Island, once owned by Aristotle Onassis and the favorite retreat of Jackie Kennedy Onassis. We anchored near the beach where Jackie herself was said to swim.

Unsurprisingly, we weren’t the only ones with that idea. Several other boats, large and small, had gathered in the same bay as their own Ionian island hoping was coming to an end. While the waters were as stunning as expected — a perfect mix of blue and green — the crowd made it feel a bit less serene. After a short dip and a few photos, we decided to move on, cherishing the moment but ready to return to calmer waters in our Ionian experience.

Return to Nydri – A Day to Remember

We cruised back to Nydri just as the sky turned pink and gold, with the Ionian Sea gently rippling behind us. The kids, salty and sun-kissed, chatted nonstop about their favorite parts of the trip — the swimming pigs were a unanimous highlight, closely followed by the diving at Kastos and lunch at the taverna.

As for the adults, we were tired in the best possible way — relaxed, happy, and already dreaming about the next time. A special thanks goes to our talented captain, George, whose skill and good spirit made this unforgettable boat trip possible — truly one of the greatest highlights of any summer in Lefkada islands.

Final Thoughts

A day like this — filled with natural beauty, local charm, and the freedom to explore Ionian Island hoping at your own pace — is exactly why the Ionian Islands are so beloved by travelers. Whether it’s caves, wildlife, secret beaches, or small villages, each stop offered something different, and together they created a truly memorable Ionian experience.

Would we do it again? Absolutely. We are all looking forward to it!
